A front camera shows you one thing and saves the mirror of it, so the writing on your shirt reads backwards and your parting is on the wrong side. Drop the selfie in and it is flipped left to right — mirrored back to how you actually look — then optimized on the way out.

Because the preview is mirrored on purpose. A front camera shows you the reflection you are used to in a mirror, so that raising your right hand raises the hand on the right of the screen. Many phones then save what the lens actually saw, which is the reverse of the preview — and that is the version that looks wrong to you, because it is the version everybody else sees.
Left to right, which is what this page is already set to. Top to bottom turns the picture upside down and is for a photo that was scanned or copied the wrong way up, not for a selfie.
The mirroring itself is exact — the pixels are rearranged, not recalculated. The image is then saved again as a JPEG, and that step is lossy like any other save. It is one re-encode at high quality, and the file is optimized in the same pass, so what you download is smaller than what you dropped in.
Not an ordinary phone photo. Anything up to about 16 megapixels is flipped at its own size, so a 4032 by 3024 selfie comes back 4032 by 3024. Larger files than that are brought down, because browsers on phones abandon a canvas above roughly that size and hand back a blank image instead of an error.
